A Functional Movement Disorder (FMD) is a condition characterized by abnormal movement or positioning of part of the body due to a disruption in how the nervous system functions. Individuals with FMD may experience a wide range of distressing and often disabling symptoms, including tremors, jerks or twitching, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and even speech challenges.
Unlike other neurological movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, FMD is not caused by structural damage or degeneration of the nervous system. Instead, it is the result of a functional issue—meaning the brain and body are not communicating efficiently. The encouraging reality is that because there is no permanent damage, FMD is potentially reversible, and with the right treatment approach, symptoms can significantly improve or even fully resolve.
A Specialized, Evidence-Based Approach
The Recovery Project’s Functional Movement Disorder Program is built on the understanding that FMD requires a highly specialized, interdisciplinary approach. Our program focuses on retraining the nervous system through targeted, evidence-based rehabilitation strategies designed to restore normal movement patterns.
We emphasize:
Neuroplasticity-based rehabilitation to help “rewire” the brain and improve motor control
Task-specific training to normalize functional movement patterns
Distraction and automatic movement techniques to bypass abnormal movement patterns
Education and empowerment to help patients understand their diagnosis and the path to recovery
The LIFE Program: A Structured Path to Recovery
Our FMD treatment course, Learning Independent Function Everyday (LIFE), is an intensive, consecutive 5-day program designed to jumpstart recovery and provide patients with immediate, meaningful progress.
Following the initial program, patients return for a 3-month follow-up session to reinforce progress, refine strategies, and ensure continued success.
We designed LIFE to equip each patient with the tools and strategies needed to:
Effectively manage their symptoms
Reduce and ultimately eliminate abnormal movement patterns
Build confidence in their body’s ability to function normally
Return to fuller, more independent lives
The focused and immersive nature of the LIFE program allows patients to experience rapid improvements while gaining a clear understanding of how to continue their progress beyond the clinic.
Flexible Options to Meet Patient Needs
We understand that not every patient can commit to a consecutive one-week program. At all Recovery Project clinic locations, our clinical staff are experts in treating FMD and can provide this same high level of specialized care through a more traditional outpatient therapy schedule.
This flexibility ensures that every patient—regardless of availability—has access to expert, evidence-based treatment and a clear path toward recovery.
Individualized Treatment for Meaningful Recovery
Every patient with FMD presents differently, which is why our program is fully individualized. Our skilled team of physical and occupational therapists work closely with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan that targets their specific symptoms and goals.
Treatment may include:
Gait and balance training
Coordination and motor control exercises
Functional task practice (walking, reaching, daily activities)
Strategies to reduce symptom severity and frequency
Techniques to improve speech and communication when needed
Restoring Confidence and Independence
FMD symptoms can be unpredictable and frustrating, often impacting a person’s confidence and ability to participate in daily life. At The Recovery Project, we don’t just treat symptoms—we help patients regain trust in their bodies.
Through consistent, focused therapy, patients often experience:
Improved movement control
Reduced symptom severity
Increased independence in daily activities
Greater confidence in their ability to function
A Message of Hope
One of the most important aspects of an FMD diagnosis is understanding that recovery is possible. Because the condition is rooted in how the nervous system is functioning—not damaged—patients have a real opportunity to improve and even fully recover.
At The Recovery Project, our mission is to guide patients through that recovery with expertise, compassion, and a proven, results-driven approach.
