Wellness Programs

Your skilled physical therapy sessions may have come to an end, but your wellness journey does not have to. The Recovery Project understands that insurance is limited and only covers a finite amount of skilled physical and occupational therapy, so we have developed a variety of cost-effective and accessible wellness therapy programs to ensure our clients maintain and build on the benefits achieved. With research proving that patients require approximately 50 hours of exercise within six months of skilled, supervised therapy to maintain the functional change achieved, it is important to stay active.

Our wellness programs include: Supported Fitness, Adaptive Yoga Program, PWR! Gym, Independent Fitness and Personal Training.

Supported Fitness

Our supported fitness program is a wellness therapy program designed by our team of experts specifically for aging adults and people with neuromuscular diseases to participate in after their skilled therapy is completed. Clients will receive one-on-one supervised sessions that address key components such as strength, flexibility, balance and ambulation.

Our trained therapists are also able to develop home exercise programs to continue therapy outside of the clinic.

Adaptive Yoga Program

The Recovery Project has combined traditional yoga postures, advanced therapy techniques and state-of-the-art therapeutic equipment to create an innovative, relaxing and beneficial adaptive yoga program that brings new balance and alignment to clients. With the use of our Red Cord system and other props, as well as customized poses, our therapists develop specific programs for aging adults and the physically challenged.

Adaptive yoga brings a host of benefits, including increased muscle tone, reduced anxiety, recovery from fatigue and weakness, boosted metabolism and lymphatic circulation, increased flexibility, improved concentration, and enhanced balance, coordination, posture and agility.

PWR! Gym

Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!) is an exercise-based program designed for all stages of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Treatment plans optimize brain health, as well as target physical deficits. The PWR! Gym is a community based exercise program and continuation of the Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) Program.  The classes are research-based and organized into a variety of different intensities to accommodate the specific needs of each individual as well as the disease severity.  Classes uniquely address the cognitive, emotional, sensory and motor symptoms often associated with PD.

Classes will include:

  • Fun, engaging and challenging activities
  • Exercises focused on the building blocks of every day movement, which are performed with large amplitude, high effort and attention to action in multiple postures
  • Cardio programs for brain health
  • Free screening before classes begin and 6 months after to track your progress
  • An opportunity to meet others in your community living with PD!
  All classes are taught by a PWR! trained clinician. Before starting any class, you must schedule a consultation to ensure you are in the class that is right for you. All programs are regularly updated as new research becomes available.

PWR! Cardio

Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!) Cardio is part of the PWR! Gym exercise program for individuals with Parkinson’s Disease. PWR! Cardio focuses on progressive cardiovascular training, dual task activities, and PWR! moves from seated positions. This class is led by a physical therapist and designed specifically for patients with more mobility difficulties, and for those with cognitive challenges due to Parkinson’s Disease.

PWR! Cardio is offered every Thursday from 4-5 p.m. at the Livonia clinic. Classes are $15 for one 60-minute class, or $135 for 10 60-minute classes.

Independent Fitness

The Recovery Project’s gyms are stocked with a wide variety of advanced and specialized exercise equipment that cannot be found anywhere else in the region. Understanding this, and wanting to ensure everyone who is interested can access our equipment, we have created an independent fitness program in which clients and community members can access and independently use our gyms on their own time for a nominal fee each month.

Personal Training

Our skilled therapists and trainers can develop customized, targeted personal fitness programs and routines for clients and community members who wish to continue building their specific skills and working toward their fitness goals.
